SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE

San Miguel de Allende is a provincial town located in Guanajuato, Mexico, famous for its colonial architecture, cosmpolitan atmosphere and vibrant culture.

Founded in 1542 by a Franciscan monk, Fray Juan de San Miguel, the town later added “Allende” in honor of Ignacio Allende, the Independence hero of 1810, who was born here.

After the Independence War, San Miguel was in a state of decline until a group of artists promoted its picturesque charm. It gradually became a popular destination for art lovers, writers, foreign retirees and tourists.

In 2008, San Miguel became part of the World Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

Throughout the years, it has been one of a select few cities worldwide to be honored multiple times running by international organizations and travel magazines such as Travel + Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler and Food and Travel, among others:

2019 Best destination in Mexico by Food and Travel

San Miguel de Allende was endorsed with the World Travel & Tourism Council's (WTTC) "Safe Travels" seal of approval recognizing the implementation of global standardized health and hygiene protocols in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

The city's central location and rich history -as well as its culture, gastronomy, art and people- are a part of what contributes to its nickname as "The Heart of Mexico".
